In 1657, Baieido's founder named himself "Jinkoya Sakubei" and specialized in selling incense ingredients and incense sticks. In the time-honored traditions of Jinkoya Sakubei, Baieido has dedicated itself to making incense for over 300 years. The method and recipes have been handed down from generation to generation in an unbroken secret oral tradition. Baieido's ardent desire is to provide the true sacred aromas of only the purest high quality incense through the methods treasured since its establishment in 1657.
Nippon Kodo's devotion to making fine incense follows a long and honored tradition that started more than 400 years ago and can be traced back to Jyuemon Takai, better known as Koju, a skilled artisan in the art and the principal provider of precious rare and exquisite aromas to the Emperor of Japan and his Court. Many of those pleasing and enduring high-quality incense fragrances, which the company continues to produce to this day, are based on the original formulas created by Koju.
Shoyeido incense is considered the highest quality, most natural incense available on earth. Highly trained "masters" draw upon centuries-old secrets to create masterworks of fragrance. In the early 18th century, Rokubei Moritsune Hata began incorporating incense-making techniques he learned as an employee of Kyoto's Imperial Palace. He would eventually introduce a new world of scent to an audience beyond the realm of royalty. Twelve generations later, the Hata family continue to create an amazing array of fragrances.
